Full Court Press
“Full Court Press,” the annual United States Basketball Writers Association sports writing seminar and scholarship competition, will take place on Friday, March 31 in the football press box at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.The session will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., and will be followed by the presentation of the Oscar Robertson Trophy to the USBWA Player of the Year.

The 17th anniversary event provides opportunities for students interested in a career in sports journalism to cover events on the day before the national semifinals, including practices, press conferences and the Reese’s College All Star Game.

Students may enter a writing competition for a $1,000 scholarship in honor of the late Larry Donald, the only two-time USBWA president and the founder and long-time publisher and editor of Basketball Times.

The seminar is being organized by the Sports Capital Journalism Program at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and will be moderated by its director, past USBWA president and Hall of Fame member Malcolm Moran.

There is limited space available, so early registration is strongly encouraged. Applications will be accepted in the order they are received.

Journalism in Color: Reporting on issues as a minority journalist
Join the ASU chapters of National Association of Black Journalists, National Association of Hispanic Journalists, and Asian American Journalists Association as they host a panel discussion called “Journalism in Color”. The conversation will center around how minority journalists cover stories relating to social justice issues such as race, immigration, and police brutality under the Trump administration. Panelists will include Warren Trent of 3TV, Charly Edsitty of 12 News, Heidi Renpenning of Univision, and Abe Kwok of the Arizona Republic.

Venita Hawthrone-Jones, Director of Cronkite News-Phoenix Bureau, will moderate the conversation.

‘Journalism in Color’ will be held on Wednesday, March 22 at 7:30pm in the First Amendment Forum.

BuzzFeed News is looking for a photo intern to join us this summer! S/he should have a strong interest in current events, photography, photographers and how images can make or break a story. Summer 2017- BuzzFeed PR Paid Internship- New York
BuzzFeed is seeking a motivated, organized, hard-working and creative public relations intern to join the Communications team in New York for the summer. The PR intern will aid a Communications team that spans all divisions of BuzzFeed, gaining experience in news, entertainment, international, business, tech and commerce communications.

The PR intern will be responsible for managing team press lists and other pertinent documents, tracking press coverage across all BuzzFeed properties, and contributing heavily to a semi-weekly company-wide newsletter of press hits. The intern will be encouraged to research and generate original pitch ideas, and will be able to work with every member of the team on a project-to-project basis.

Summer 2017- 5280 Digital-Editorial Internship in Denver- PAID
5280 offers an editorial internship program focused on digital and multimedia storytelling. Interns work closely with the editorial staff on projects, which may include (but are not limited to) video production, writing and reporting stories, research, social media, and website maintenance.

As part of the program, interns will take part in training sessions and mentorship. Training sessions are run by editors and provide an overview of how the magazine works, from pitching to editing to art/design. Interns are also paired with an editor to gain firsthand knowledge about a career in journalism.

Although a magazine journalism, or English degree, (or working toward a degree) is preferred, it’s not required. Published clips or writing samples are required. Applicants with a background in photography, video (5280 uses Final Cut Pro), HTML coding, or social media are encouraged to apply. A commitment of 20 hours a week is required. Vincent Chin Memorial Scholarship: $500 available to current student journalists for writing about the legacy of Vincent Chin in essay form. The application deadline is April 16, 2017.

Jimmie & Suey Fong Yee Scholarship: Two $900 scholarships available for a current student and a recent graduate pursuing sports journalism to offset costs for registration, travel, accommodations and meals for the 2017 AAJA National Convention in Philadelphia. The Valley of the Sun Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) offers a $500 scholarship for the fall term beginning August 2017. The scholarship is open to all community college and university students in Arizona, studying journalism, mass communicaitons or a related field.

Applicants must provide a cover letter (no more than two pages), detailing the student’s current school
enrollment, area of interest in the field (broadcast, print, online, etc.), what career path he/she would
like to pursue after graduation, and what personal goals he/she would like to achieve as a professional

The SPJ Code of Ethics touches on several specific areas, including the gathering and reporting of news, as well as ethical behavior when dealing with sources. In an era where the rise of “fake news” is eroding the public’s confidence in the media, it is more important than ever for legitimate journalists to be mindful of SPJ’s Code of Ethics, specifically, that they should “Take responsibility for the accuracy of their work. Verify information before releasing it. Remember that neither speed nor format excuses inaccuracy.”

As the NCAA’s national radio partner for the NCAA Tournament, Westwood One will produce a national radio remote live on location from the home of the Final Four. We will have 14 radio stations from top markets across the country, as well as national radio outlet CBS Sports Radio. -Maintain accurate transmitter logs and program logs.
-Double check that audio elements are problem free, before they air.
-Ensure that transmitter is operating according to FCC parameters.
-Record satellite feeds.
-Air emergency alerts.
-Communicate and be a part of shows with hosts, anchors and producers on upcoming elements. Occasionally assist producer. Give time cues.
-Report equipment problems, update discrepancy reports to communicate any occurrence that departs from program log or quality goals.
-Cross-training on other shifts in the event of scheduling emergencies.

Two years news/talk/sports radio control room work.
Digital/website experience helpful.
Ability to drive company vehicles for remote broadcasts (valid driver’s license and clean driving record required).

POSITION OBJECTIVE: To update, gather, and create news and sports content for the KTAR and Arizona Sports web sites. Ensure that all content on KTAR.com and ArizonaSports.com is fresh and represents the high standards of the stations’ on-air products. The ideal candidate for this position demonstrates strong editorial skills and sound news judgment with experience reporting or writing for a print publication or online news outlet. This is a unique position that requires extreme flexibility, including some work on weekends, evenings, etc. In addition, the position requires the flexibility and dependability to work additional hours during breaking news and other big news and sports events. Works closely with the digital media team, news and other departments to help make KTAR.com and ArizonaSports.com world class web sites.

Videographer Needed on ASU Tempe campus- March 6-8
Looking for a videographer for The Reach Higher Convening, a national event hosted by ASU, March 6-8, 2017 at ASU student union ballroom. The videotaping would occur in the mornings from 9 to 12 Noon, and the videographer is invited to have lunch with participants and to attend afternoon events, if desired.

Event Description:
This event is part of the Reach Higher Initiative started by Michelle Obama at Harvard University in 2014. It is a national movement that has been adopted by state college and career readiness teams across the country. The mission of the movement is to promote college and other postsecondary education for all students to meet the need of the US economy for an educated workforce. The theme of this convening is Sustainability in the Face of Change.

Benefits for Videographer:
The videographer for this event will be registered for the event at no charge and will receive meals that are provided and an invitation to a reception on Monday evening. In addition, they will have the opportunity to hear presentations about programs for sustaining and making gains in college and postsecondary attendance and completion rates. The convening includes 3 former White House staff, Gallup, representatives from 17 state teams, the Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction, ASU’s president, NAU’s Provost and many other presenters, including one from Swizterland and one from the UK . In addition, a stipend will be offered for the videography services.
