Job Description:
The Governor’s Office for Children, Youth and Families (GOCYF) is offering a 3 month paid internship (20 hours per week) for a graphic design student seeking to make a positive impact for the state. The interning student will use Microsoft PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop and InDesign to create a series of educational PowerPoint presentations to be used by the GOCYF. The PowerPoints will be utilized for community education and outreach by our various councils on substance abuse, domestic violence and human trafficking.

Responsibilities:

We strive to treat our interns just like newspaper staff members. Here is a brief description of intern duties: Interns are not limited to just the items below, as there are typically lots of opportunities to cover events and press conferences.

As a member of the media representing the Arizona Capitol Times, Summer and Fall interns will have access to the Legislature (when in session) and other government officials.

We want our interns to get the most out of their time here.

Job Duties:
Interns will be assigned a variety of stories throughout their internship at the Arizona Capitol Times. They will be required to write breaking news as assigned for the website and for the print product. Interns will also write enterprise/in-depth features for our popular Focus sections, which are included in the paper.

A basic level of familiarity with AP style; story organization and reporting ability is required for our interns.

Interns are encouraged to come up with their own story ideas as well to pitch to the internship coordinator (Josh Coddington) and managing editor (Tom Spratt) throughout their time here. It is not required, but typically makes for better stories.

Interns are also encouraged, but not required, to take photos for stories on which they report. Equipment will be provided.

Scheduling/Time:
Interns are expected to devise a set schedule and stick to that schedule as much as possible. Interns must communicate effectively with the internship coordinator at the Capitol Times.

Cronkite-Zocalo Fellowship in Santa Monica- Paid
The Cronkite School is accepting applications for student fellowships in sustainability journalism with Zócalo Public Square at ASU’s new Santa Monica., Calif., bureau.

The fellowships will be offered in the summer 2015 with students working out of the new Cronkite School bureau in Santa Monica during the fall, spring and summer semesters. Fellows will work up to 40 hours a week for $10 an hour, producing content for the Zócalo website and its media partners, and assisting with Zocalo’s public events. Students also may apply to receive Cronkite internship credit for the fellowship. Students will be responsible for arranging their own housing. The Cronkite School will cover the cost of travel to and from Santa Monica.

Zócalo Public Square, a project of the Center for Social Cohesion at Arizona State University, is a not-for-profit Ideas Exchange that seeks to engage a new, young and diverse generation in the public square through a blend of live events and humanities journalism. It partners with educational, cultural and philanthropic institutions to present free, non-partisan public events and conferences in cities across the U.S. and beyond and to publish original daily journalism that is distributed to more than 100 media outlets nationwide.

Fellows may be graduate or undergraduate Cronkite students with an interest in sustainability, energy, the environment and related fields. Duties include generating story ideas, identifying and working with Zocalo contributors (who include journalists, scholars and non-writers), writing and editing articles for the website, working with media syndicate partners, building audiences for journalism and events through social and other media, and assisting with the planning and execution of public discussions and lectures on current affairs topics. Fellows will work with a small staff of writers and editors who produce new content daily for the website and its media partners and who solicit contributions from diverse people whose voices would otherwise go unheard. Strong editing skills are a must as are curiosity and energy. The successful applicant will be able to generate story ideas off the news that provide a different perspective on current topics and write and edit for voice. Some evening work is required. Fellows may have the opportunity to travel to Zócalo events in California and around the country. A car is not required but is suggested.

“It Starts Now” Film and Video contest seeks inspiring stories about obesity in America. Entries should creatively inspire, motivate and educate the public about issues related to obesity, and can be in any genre: drama, documentary, journalism, animation, experimental or PSA. A jury from film, TV, journalism and health industries will award prizes totaling over $10,000. ASU student position: Communications Specialist
The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning (SGSUP) would like to hire a student to support its communications efforts. Responsibilities will focus around re-writing school web site content to make it more student-friendly as well as improving its search engine optimization, and researching and writing quality press releases to be submitted to ASU News.

This will initially be a summer position, but with a possibility of continuing into next school year, and will pay $14 hour. The Communications Specialist will work in the SGSUP offices on the ASU Tempe campus. The Specialist will work on a regular schedule of several days a week, but the number of hours can vary from 10 to 20 hours per week, with flexibility to accommodate availability of the person hired.

Applicants should have demonstrated experience with professional and news writing, be able to communicate effectively with faculty (both verbally and by email), strong organization and time management skills, and willingness to work as part of a team. Desired qualifications include demonstrated experience with writing student-directed materials for an academic organization, ability to grasp scientific concepts and describe them in simple language, and experience writing for search engine optimization.
