Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office – Video Production/Documentary Internship
There are few places more interesting than the Sheriff’s Office. The issues MCSO deals with on a daily basis are both intensely individual, often of life and death, as well as broadly societal, matters of politics and policy, ethics and values. The stories overlap from action to talk, from the concrete to the philosophical. These stories are not about car crashes or drunk drivers, but rather show how law enforcement is the avatar that shows where communal beliefs are really rooted and where the future lies. These are big, important stories, never covered nor even considered by a local media that is woefully inadequate in every way, from intellect to temperament to resources – to tackle such stories. Nor are these 30-second bites, but need to be revealed in longer form, from 10 minutes to an hour.

One aim of this endeavor is to bridge the gap between the popular (and sometimes unpopular) representation of MCSO to the public and the more interesting reality. This is not about local politics, nor about promoting any politician. This is about the department, its work, and the consequences. To take just a few examples, this is about the fight against the drug cartels in the desert; innovative programs in the jails; perhaps even the symbiotic relationship between the department and the media.

A bit of personal background. Lisa Allen was an established television journalist before she joined the Sheriff’s Office. Len Sherman has produced documentaries in, among others, Afghanistan, Iraq, El Salvador, Haiti, and recently returned from Thailand on similar assignment. The department itself has some terrific equipment, and individuals who are quite knowledgeable in its use. Those employees, however, have multiple responsibilities. We are seeking a couple of interns who can work with us on constructing, filming and editing some of these longer form pieces. The final deployment of these pieces will be for public consumption, one way or another. Obviously, MCSO is not a profit-making organization, which gives us intriguing latitude in disseminating our material.

This is a unique opportunity to go far beyond the ordinary intern program. We have few layers of organization, no side jobs such as clerical duties, virtually no barriers to getting right in and doing something significant. We are only doing this to create documentary pieces with a certain speed, and push out into the public arena, and thus the interns will be integral to the effort and the result.
