Summer 2013- PBS NewsHour, Virginia
The Desk Assistant (DA) position is part of a six-month entry-level program aimed at providing practical experience in a broadcast news setting. The DAs are exposed to all aspects involved in producing a nightly television news program. This position is divided into rotations among the different units that compose the NewsHour: research, newsroom, tape library, reporting, and production. Over the course of the program, each of the 8 Desk Assistants hired will work in 3 of the 6 different rotations for a period of two months each. They also act as support staff for Senior Producers, Associate Producers, Reporters and Production Assistants, by answering phones, sorting mail, distributing paper and other administrative tasks. Finally, Desk Assistants will attend a series of breakfasts with various members of our organization including correspondents, producers and reporters.

DESCRIPTION:
The Sierra Club’s Media Team is seeking an intern in our national headquarters in San Francisco. This is a great opportunity to learn more about communications in the non-profit field, while making an impact on critical environmental issues like climate change, fossil fuels and clean energy, and conservation.
While projects vary depending on the time of year, most interns gain exposure to:

Summer 2013- APS Communications Internship
Arizona Public Service, Arizona’s largest and longest-serving utility company, is seeking dynamic storytellers who can apply their craft to any medium. These summer interns will gain valuable, hands-on experience in each area of communications: media, internal, external and customer communications. The APS corporate communications team provides an excellent environment to hone a wide variety of communications skills.

Examples of assignments may include:

While they start off with smaller stories, when they prove themselves, the sky is the limit in terms of what we will let them try. But they are immediately part of the writing staff–there is no just getting coffee here! In fact, there’s no getting coffee at all. Our internships are telecommute (our entire company works that way). They learn to manage their own time, yet, we are right there, available 24/7 via phone, skype, email or in-person meetings to teach them what to do. Travel Scholarship to China
Rough Guides travel guidebooks have teamed up with World Nomads to give one winner the chance to discover Beijing, China, with the 2013 Travel Writing Scholarship.

Here’s the deal: One winner goes on a ten-day assignment to Beijing, researching essential information for the new edition of the Rough Guide to China under the mentorship of author Martin Zatko and journalist Kit Gillet. Murray Sports Writing Scholarship- $5,000
The Murray Scholar Scholarship Program offers five (5) $5,000 journalism scholarships through a nationwide essay competition, and first and foremost, to those students pursuing a career in sports writing.

An applicant must have achieved academic standing sufficiently advanced to assure completion of his/her second and/or third year of undergraduate study, achieving junior or senior status for the fall 2013 semester at the University’s School of Journalism, who will graduate in spring of 2014 (or 2015) and not mid-year.

Detailed information about the scholarship, the essay question and the application form can be found in the Student Resource Center on the second floor of The Cronkite School. All materials must be submitted to Cronkite #222 by 4:00 p.m. MST Friday, April 5.

Don’t forget that the deadline for the fourth annual Greg Crowder Photojournalism Award, honoring a Cronkite student for excellence in photojournalism, is Monday, April 8. Website Content Writer Assistant, Barrett Honors College
Fall Assistant position working on completing tasks related to the Barrett web site and online communications. Duties include helping with the organization of materials for use on the Barrett web site, to include photos, videos, press releases and profiles. Special consideration will be given to applicants with previous experience working with media on the web (WordPress, Flickr and Picasa).

Qualifications:
Skills in image/video editing (Photoshop, Windows Live Movie Maker, Final Cut Pro) and photography a plus. Applicants should be comfortable with basic composition and copywriting, and most importantly, have a critical eye for detail.
Hours: 20 per week
Pay $10.00 hourly.
