SCHOLARSHIPS AND FELLOWSHIPS

Do you have a relative or friend in high school who is interested in a career in broadcasting?

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) is expanding its scholarship program by adding a second award for college-bound students aspiring to careers in television.

The two awards honor legendary broadcasters Jim McKay and Mike Wallace and are bestowed to an outstanding high school senior who intends to pursue a communications-related baccalaureate degree in pursuit of a career in any aspect of the television industry. Each grant provides the recipient with a $10,000 stipend towards their education.

“The Jim McKay and Mike Wallace Memorial Scholarships reflect the best traditions of the National Academy, honoring the contributions of two great broadcasters as well as the creative and academic achievements of a new generation,” said new NATAS Scholarship Committee chairman Adam Sharp, a 1996 recipient of the National Academy’s scholarship program. “These scholarships are an investment in television’s future and create meaningful opportunities for these honored students.”

The Jim McKay Memorial Scholarship, now in its fourth year, honors sportscaster Jim McKay (1921-2008) and is funded in equal parts by ABC, CBS, NBC, HBO and FOX. The networks have recently extended their commitment to a second four years beginning with the 2014 award.

This is the inaugural year of the Mike Wallace Memorial Scholarship, honoring longtime CBS newsman Mike Wallace (1918-2012). It is funded by a five-year grant from CBS News.
