Summer 2014 MCSO Summer Internship- video

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office seeks summer interns with the intent on filming and posting short daily stories on our website. We will seek out stories that are not only informative but also visually interesting and even exciting. Each intern will be responsible for shooting and editing his/her subject, and we want to put out as many stories and as quickly as we can. Each story will close with the intern responsible given screen credit, to help build an impressive resume.

Those who wish can advance into the fall’s internship, which will continue the daily work as well as produce a multipart television series.

As explained in the prior posting regarding the series: This will be a documentary series between 4 and 7 episodes, on the changing nature of law enforcement, utilizing the MCSO as the agency through which this story will be told. A variety of important and perhaps controversial topics will be examined, including MCSO’s relationship to the Latino community, as personified by the town of Guadeloupe; MCSO’s relationship with the Native American community; the impact of electing the sheriff versus an appointed urban police chief; the role of jails in rehabilitation, versus punishment; the relationship between local law enforcement and the federal government; and more. This will not be a studio show but one shot mainly in the field, on the go, requiring ingenuity and assertiveness.

This is not intended as just an exercise, but a professional series to be sold to networks in the US and overseas.

A bit of personal background: Len Sherman has produced documentaries in Afghanistan, Iraq, El Salvador, Haiti, Thailand and elsewhere. Lisa Allen, MCSO’s director of media relations, was an established television journalist before she joined the Sheriff’s Office.

This is a unique opportunity to go far beyond the ordinary intern program. We have few organizational layers, no side jobs such as clerical duties, virtually no barriers to getting right in and doing something noteworthy.

CONTESTS

DSLR

Photo Contest
If you could capture the Cronkite School and community in one image, what would it be? The student chapter of the National Press Photographers Association at Cronkite is hosting a photo competition, and the winning image will replace the current background image on all Cronkite computers at the beginning of the next school year. In other words, the winning photo will be the one every Cronkite student will see every day when he or she sits down at a computer in the school! The competition is open to all Cronkite students, and everyone is encouraged to enter, regardless of photography experience.

Photos may be taken with a DSLR or a smart phone, but the image and its story is most important. We are looking for photographs that represent the spirit of the Cronkite school. Think about your role as a Cronkite student and what it means to be a member of such a wonderful community.

The deadline for all entries is midnight on May 1, 2014.

NPPA will submit its top choices for the winning entry to the Cronkite dean’s office, which will have final say over the selection.

Entries should be sent to photocontest.nppa.asu@gmail.com. Send your entry as a JPG file saved at medium quality, 10 inches to the longest dimension and 72 DPI. Save the image with your name as the file name. Entries are limited to one per student and should be one photograph, not a collage of images. Please remember to adhere to the ethical guidelines of photojournalism and provide basic cut line information so we know when the image was shot and who is depicted.

For more information, contact Sean at slogan2@asu.edu or Associate Dean Kristin Gilger, NPPA chapter adviser, at Kristin.gilger@asu.edu.

Summer 2014 Internship- America Red Cross
Public Affairs Internship

A public affairs intern for the American Red Cross works closely with the communications team, led by the chief communications officer for the Phoenix Region of the American Red Cross. The team supports public affairs and marketing activities for all service lines of the Red Cross in Arizona’s 15 counties. We use accepted communications strategies and tactics to foster communication with Arizonans about Red Cross efforts in these Red Cross service lines:
•disaster preparedness, response and recovery
•service to the armed forces (emergency messaging, pre and post deployment briefing)
•health and safety (CPR, first aid and water safety training);

The paid staff of two professional communicators recruits, trains and leads an unpaid communications team of approximately 35 volunteers across the state. Many of these volunteers are seasoned print and broadcast reporters or public affairs professionals from private and public sectors. Public affairs interns are part of the unpaid staff, and receive training, mentoring and opportunities to provide communications and marketing support in areas of interest to them.

The Red Cross chief communications officer works with each intern to design an internship experience that will meet the intern’s goals. Opportunities for on-air work, news and feature writing, photography, videography, social media and public relations /marketing are abundant. Please note that social media is not a stand-alone platform at Red Cross; instead, it is part of Red Cross overall communications strategies.

Because the needs for Red Cross services are 24/7, so are opportunities for to work nights and weekends all across the state of Arizona. Much of the work can be done remotely, but some face time with the chief communications officer in Phoenix is required. This requirement can be met in a variety of ways if the intern is in school or living away from the Phoenix area.

Time commitment: is a minimum of 15 hours per week. Like all Red Cross volunteers, the intern will be expected to use his or her own smart phone for Red Cross work. All intern candidates must complete the Red Cross volunteer application and background check (start that at www.redcross.org/gcc). Background check is done at the cost of the American Red Cross. Deployment to local disasters is not required, but is a rich learning experience and is encouraged.

Personal qualities and professional skills required include:
•mature judgment and professional behavior
•ability to multi-task and work in a busy environment, often with changing priorities and tight deadlines
•thorough knowledge of AP style
•solid reporting and writing abilities
•knowledge of social media platforms (especially Facebook and Twitter)
•adherence to the values of the American Red Cross, including neutrality, impartiality, humanity and service.

CONTESTS

Photojournalism Contest

While a student at ASU, he worked for The State Press, ASU’s independent student newspaper, and interned at The Arizona Republic. His parents, Troy and Betsy Crowder of Chandler, Ariz., established the Greg Crowder Memorial Photojournalism Award and an endowment at the Cronkite School to honor the life and spirit of their late son. Each year’s winners are selected by a committee of Cronkite School faculty and professional photojournalists. The winner of the annual award receives a $1,000 prize, and his or her photos are exhibited at the Cronkite School for a year. Up to three finalists also are honored at an annual reception in September. This year’s deadline for entries is Friday, April 11, 2014.

Entry requirements:

Entries should be submitted to Associate Dean Kristin Gilger at kristin.gilger@asu.edu or at Cronkite Suite 302 by 6 p.m. on April 11, 2014.

The winning photographer will receive a $1,000 award, and his or her work will be prominently displayed in the Cronkite School for a year. Honorable mentions are awarded at the discretion of the judges.
